ٱتَّبِعُوا۟ مَآ أُنزِلَ إِلَيْكُم مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ وَلَا تَتَّبِعُوا۟ مِن دُونِهِۦٓ أَوْلِيَآءَ ۗ قَلِيلًا مَّا تَذَكَّرُونَ ittabi`ū mā unzila ilaykum min rabbikum walā tattabi`ū min dūnihi awliyā-a ۗ qalīlan mā tadhakkarūn Follow what has been revealed to you by your Lord, and do not follow any other lord apart from Him. Yet little do you care to remember.

وَكَم مِّن قَرْيَةٍ أَهْلَكْنَـٰهَا فَجَآءَهَا بَأْسُنَا بَيَـٰتًا أَوْ هُمْ قَآئِلُونَ wakam min qaryatin ahlaknāhā fajā-ahā ba-sunā bayātan aw hum qā-ilūn Many a habitation have We laid low before: Our retribution came upon them in the night or in the midst of siesta at noon.
5
فَمَا كَانَ دَعْوَىٰهُمْ إِذْ جَآءَهُم بَأْسُنَآ إِلَّآ أَن قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّا كُنَّا ظَـٰلِمِينَ famā kāna da`wāhum idh jā-ahum ba-sunā illā an qālū innā kunnā ẓālimīn And when Our punishment overtook them they had nothing to say except crying out: "We have indeed been sinners."
6

7
فَلَنَقُصَّنَّ عَلَيْهِم بِعِلْمٍ ۖ وَمَا كُنَّا غَآئِبِينَ falanaquṣṣanna `alayhim bi`il-m ۖ wa mā kunnā ghā-ibīn We shall recount (their deeds) to them with knowledge, for We were never absent (and saw all they did).
8
وَٱلْوَزْنُ يَوْمَئِذٍ ٱلْحَقُّ ۚ فَمَن ثَقُلَتْ مَوَٰزِينُهُۥ فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْمُفْلِحُونَ wal waznu yawma-idhinil-ḥaqq ۚ faman thaqulat mawāzīnuhu fa-ulā-ika humul mufliḥūn And the weighing will be just on that Day. Then those whose (deeds) are heavier in the balance will find fulfilment,
9

11
وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَـٰكُمْ ثُمَّ صَوَّرْنَـٰكُمْ ثُمَّ قُلْنَا لِلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِ ٱسْجُدُوا۟ لِـَٔادَمَ فَسَجَدُوٓا۟ إِلَّآ إِبْلِيسَ لَمْ يَكُن مِّنَ ٱلسَّـٰجِدِينَ walaqad khalaqnākum thumma ṣawwarnākum thumma qulnā lil-malā-ikatis-judū li-ādama fasajadū illā iblīsa lam yakun minas sājidīn Verily We created you and gave you form and shape, and ordered the angels to bow before Adam in homage; and they all bowed but Iblis who was not among those who bowed.
12
قَالَ مَا مَنَعَكَ أَلَّا تَسْجُدَ إِذْ أَمَرْتُكَ ۖ قَالَ أَنَا۠ خَيْرٌ مِّنْهُ خَلَقْتَنِى مِن نَّارٍ وَخَلَقْتَهُۥ مِن طِينٍ qāla mā mana`aka allā tasjuda idh amartuk ۖ qāla ana khayrun minhu khalaqtanī min nārin wakhalaqtahu min ṭīn "What prevented you" (said God), "from bowing (before Adam) at My bidding?" "I am better than him," said he. "You created me from fire, and him from clay."
13
قَالَ فَٱهْبِطْ مِنْهَا فَمَا يَكُونُ لَكَ أَن تَتَكَبَّرَ فِيهَا فَٱخْرُجْ إِنَّكَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰغِرِينَ qāla fahbiṭ minhā famā yakūnu laka an tatakabbara fīhā fakhruj innaka minaṣ ṣāghirīn So God said: "Descend. You have no right to be insolent here. Go, and away; you are one of the damned."
14
قَالَ أَنظِرْنِىٓ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ يُبْعَثُونَ qāla anẓirnī ilā yawmi yub`athūn "Grant me respite," said he, "till the raising of the dead."
15
قَالَ إِنَّكَ مِنَ ٱلْمُنظَرِينَ qāla innaka minal munẓarīn And God said: "You have the respite."
16

18
قَالَ ٱخْرُجْ مِنْهَا مَذْءُومًا مَّدْحُورًا ۖ لَّمَن تَبِعَكَ مِنْهُمْ لَأَمْلَأَنَّ جَهَنَّمَ مِنكُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ qālakh-ruj minhā madh-ūman mad-ḥūrā ۖ laman tabi`aka minhum la-amla-anna jahannama minkum ajma`īn "Begone," said (God), "contemptible and rejected! 20
فَوَسْوَسَ لَهُمَا ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُ لِيُبْدِىَ لَهُمَا مَا وُۥرِىَ عَنْهُمَا مِن سَوْءَٰتِهِمَا وَقَالَ مَا نَهَىٰكُمَا رَبُّكُمَا عَنْ هَـٰذِهِ ٱلشَّجَرَةِ إِلَّآ أَن تَكُونَا مَلَكَيْنِ أَوْ تَكُونَا مِنَ ٱلْخَـٰلِدِينَ fawaswasa lahumash shayṭānu liyubdiya lahumā mā wūriya `anhumā min saw-ātihimā waqāla mā nahākumā rabbukumā `an hādhihish shajarati illā an takūnā malakayni aw takūnā minal khālidīn But Satan suggested (evil) to them, in order to reveal their hidden parts of which they were not aware (till then), and said: "Your Lord has forbidden you (to go near) this tree that you may not become angels or immortal."
21
وَقَاسَمَهُمَآ إِنِّى لَكُمَا لَمِنَ ٱلنَّـٰصِحِينَ waqāsamahumā innī lakumā laminan nāṣiḥīn Then he said to them on oath: "I am your sincere friend;"
22

When they tasted (the fruit) of the tree their disgrace became exposed to them; and they patched the leaves of the Garden to hide it. And the Lord said to them: "Did I not forbid you this tree? And I told you that Satan was your open enemy.
23
قَالَا رَبَّنَا ظَلَمْنَآ أَنفُسَنَا وَإِن لَّمْ تَغْفِرْ لَنَا وَتَرْحَمْنَا لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلْخَـٰسِرِينَ qālā rabbanā ẓalamnā anfusanā wa in lam taghfir lanā watarḥamnā lanakūnanna minal khāsirīn They said: "O our Lord, we have wronged ourselves. If You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we shall certainly be lost."
24

This is one of the tokens of God: You may haply reflect.
27

29

The day that (Reality) is unravelled, the people who had lost sight of it will say: "The apostles of our Lord had indeed brought the truth. Do we have any one to intercede for us? If only we could go back to the world, we would act otherwise." Indeed they have caused themselves harm, and the lies they concocted did not help.

إِنَّ رَبَّكُمُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ فِى سِتَّةِ أَيَّامٍ ثُمَّ ٱسْتَوَىٰ عَلَى ٱلْعَرْشِ يُغْشِى ٱلَّيْلَ ٱلنَّهَارَ يَطْلُبُهُۥ حَثِيثًا وَٱلشَّمْسَ وَٱلْقَمَرَ وَٱلنُّجُومَ مُسَخَّرَٰتٍۭ بِأَمْرِهِۦٓ ۗ أَلَا لَهُ ٱلْخَلْقُ وَٱلْأَمْرُ ۗ تَبَارَكَ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ inna rabbakumullāhul ladhī khalaqas samāwāti wal-arḍa fī sittati ayyāmin thummas-tawā `alal-`arshi yughshil laylan nahāra yaṭlubuhu ḥathīthan wash shamsa wal qamara wan nujūma musakhharātin bi-amrih ۗ alā lahul khalqu wal-amr ۗ tabārakallāhu rabbul `ālamīn Surely your Lord is God who created the heavens and the earth in six spans of time, then assumed all power. He covers up the day with night which comes chasing it fast; and the sun and moon and the stars are subject to His command. It is His to create and enjoin. Blessed be God, the Lord of all the worlds.

So do We explain Our signs in different ways to people who give thanks.

قَالَ ٱلْمَلَأُ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱسْتَكْبَرُوا۟ مِن قَوْمِهِۦ لِلَّذِينَ ٱسْتُضْعِفُوا۟ لِمَنْ ءَامَنَ مِنْهُمْ أَتَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ صَـٰلِحًا مُّرْسَلٌ مِّن رَّبِّهِۦ ۚ قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّا بِمَآ أُرْسِلَ بِهِۦ مُؤْمِنُونَ qālal-mala-ul ladhīnas-takbarū min qawmihi lilladhīnas-tuḍ`ifū liman āmana minhum ata`lamūna anna ṣāliḥan mursalun min rabbih ۚ qālū innā bimā ursila bihi mu-minūn The chiefs among the people who were arrogant towards the weaker ones among them who believed, asked: "Do you really know that Saleh has been sent by his Lord?" They said: "Indeed we believe in the message he has brought."
76
قَالَ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱسْتَكْبَرُوٓا۟ إِنَّا بِٱلَّذِىٓ ءَامَنتُم بِهِۦ كَـٰفِرُونَ qālal ladhīnas-takbarū innā bil ladhī āmantum bihi kāfirūn Those who were arrogant answered: "We do not believe in what you believe."
77
فَعَقَرُوا۟ ٱلنَّاقَةَ وَعَتَوْا۟ عَنْ أَمْرِ رَبِّهِمْ وَقَالُوا۟ يَـٰصَـٰلِحُ ٱئْتِنَا بِمَا تَعِدُنَآ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ fa`aqarun nāqata wa`ataw `an amri rabbihim waqālū yāṣāliḥu-tinā bimā ta`idunā in kunta minal mursalīn Then they hamstrung the she-camel and rebelled against the command of their Lord, and said: "Bring, O Saleh, on us the affliction you promise, if you are one of the sent ones."
78
فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ ٱلرَّجْفَةُ فَأَصْبَحُوا۟ فِى دَارِهِمْ جَـٰثِمِينَ fa-akhadhat-humur rajfatu fa-aṣbaḥū fī dārihim jāthimīn Then they were seized by an earthquake, and lay overturned on the ground in their homes in the morning.
79
فَتَوَلَّىٰ عَنْهُمْ وَقَالَ يَـٰقَوْمِ لَقَدْ أَبْلَغْتُكُمْ رِسَالَةَ رَبِّى وَنَصَحْتُ لَكُمْ وَلَـٰكِن لَّا تُحِبُّونَ ٱلنَّـٰصِحِينَ fatawallā `anhum waqāla yāqawmi laqad ablaghtukum risālata rabbī wanaṣaḥtu lakum walākin lā tuḥibbūnan nāṣiḥīn Saleh turned away from them and said: "O my people, I conveyed to you the message of my Lord and warned you; but you do not like those who wish you well."
80
وَلُوطًا إِذْ قَالَ لِقَوْمِهِۦٓ أَتَأْتُونَ ٱلْفَـٰحِشَةَ مَا سَبَقَكُم بِهَا مِنْ أَحَدٍ مِّنَ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ walūṭan idh qāla liqawmihi ata-tūnal fāḥishata mā sabaqakum bihā min aḥadin minal `ālamīn And We sent Lot, who said to his people: "Why do you commit this lecherous act which none in the world has committed before?
81
إِنَّكُمْ لَتَأْتُونَ ٱلرِّجَالَ شَهْوَةً مِّن دُونِ ٱلنِّسَآءِ ۚ بَلْ أَنتُمْ قَوْمٌ مُّسْرِفُونَ innakum lata-tūnar rijāla shahwatan min dūnin nisā-i ۚ bal antum qawmun musrifūn In preference to women you satisfy your lust with men. Indeed you are a people who are guilty of excess."
82
وَمَا كَانَ جَوَابَ قَوْمِهِۦٓ إِلَّآ أَن قَالُوٓا۟ أَخْرِجُوهُم مِّن قَرْيَتِكُمْ ۖ إِنَّهُمْ أُنَاسٌ يَتَطَهَّرُونَ wa mā kāna jawāba qawmihi illā an qālū akhrijūhum min qaryatikum ۖ innahum unāsun yataṭahharūn His people made no answer, and only said: "Drive them out of the city. They profess to be pure."
83
فَأَنجَيْنَـٰهُ وَأَهْلَهُۥٓ إِلَّا ٱمْرَأَتَهُۥ كَانَتْ مِنَ ٱلْغَـٰبِرِينَ fa-anjaynāhu wa-ahlahu illam-ra-atahu kānat minal ghābirīn But We saved him and his family, except for his wife who was one of those who stayed behind.
84
وَأَمْطَرْنَا عَلَيْهِم مَّطَرًا ۖ فَٱنظُرْ كَيْفَ كَانَ عَـٰقِبَةُ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ wa-amṭarnā `alayhim maṭarā ۖ fanẓur kayfa kāna `āqibatul mujrimīn And We rained down on them a shower (of Stones). So witness the end of sinners!

وَإِلَىٰ مَدْيَنَ أَخَاهُمْ شُعَيْبًا ۗ قَالَ يَـٰقَوْمِ ٱعْبُدُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ مَا لَكُم مِّنْ إِلَـٰهٍ غَيْرُهُۥ ۖ قَدْ جَآءَتْكُم بَيِّنَةٌ مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ ۖ فَأَوْفُوا۟ ٱلْكَيْلَ وَٱلْمِيزَانَ وَلَا تَبْخَسُوا۟ ٱلنَّاسَ أَشْيَآءَهُمْ وَلَا تُفْسِدُوا۟ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ بَعْدَ إِصْلَـٰحِهَا ۚ ذَٰلِكُمْ خَيْرٌ لَّكُمْ إِن كُنتُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ wa ilā madyana akhāhum shu`aybā ۗ qāla yāqawmi'-budullāha mā lakum min ilāhin ghayruh ۖ qad jā-at kum bayyinatun min rabbikum ۖ fa-awful kayla wal mīzāna walā tabkhasun nāsa ashyā-ahum walā tufsidū fil-arḍi ba`da iṣlāḥihā ۚ dhālikum khayrul lakum in kuntum mu-minīn Remember, We sent to Midian their brother Shu'aib. "O you people," he said, "worship God, for you have no other god but He. Clear proof has come to you from your Lord; so give in full measure and full weight; do not keep back from people what is theirs, and do not corrupt the land after it has been reformed. This is best for you if you believe.

وَلَا تَقْعُدُوا۟ بِكُلِّ صِرَٰطٍ تُوعِدُونَ وَتَصُدُّونَ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ مَنْ ءَامَنَ بِهِۦ وَتَبْغُونَهَا عِوَجًا ۚ وَٱذْكُرُوٓا۟ إِذْ كُنتُمْ قَلِيلًا فَكَثَّرَكُمْ ۖ وَٱنظُرُوا۟ كَيْفَ كَانَ عَـٰقِبَةُ ٱلْمُفْسِدِينَ walā taq`udū bikulli ṣirāṭin tū`idūna wataṣuddūna `an sabīlillāhi man āmana bihi watabghūnahā `iwajā ۚ wadhkurū idh kuntum qalīlan fakathharakum ۖ wanẓurū kayfa kāna `āqibatul mufsidīn Do not lie in ambush to intimidate and divert from the path of God those who believe in Him, nor seek obliquity in it. Remember the day when you were few and He increased your numbers. So consider the fate of those who were evil.
87
وَإِن كَانَ طَآئِفَةٌ مِّنكُمْ ءَامَنُوا۟ بِٱلَّذِىٓ أُرْسِلْتُ بِهِۦ وَطَآئِفَةٌ لَّمْ يُؤْمِنُوا۟ فَٱصْبِرُوا۟ حَتَّىٰ يَحْكُمَ ٱللَّهُ بَيْنَنَا ۚ وَهُوَ خَيْرُ ٱلْحَـٰكِمِينَ wa in kāna ṭā-ifatun minkum āmanū bil ladhī ursiltu bihi waṭā-ifatun lam yu-minū faṣbirū ḥattā yaḥkumallāhu baynanā ۚ wahuwa khayrul ḥākimīn If some of you believe what has been sent through me, and some of you do not, have patience until God decide between us, for He is the best of all judges."

قَالَ ٱلْمَلَأُ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱسْتَكْبَرُوا۟ مِن قَوْمِهِۦ لَنُخْرِجَنَّكَ يَـٰشُعَيْبُ وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ مَعَكَ مِن قَرْيَتِنَآ أَوْ لَتَعُودُنَّ فِى مِلَّتِنَا ۚ قَالَ أَوَلَوْ كُنَّا كَـٰرِهِينَ qālal-mala-ul ladhīnas-takbarū min qawmihi lanukhrijannaka yāshu`aybu wal ladhīna āmanū ma`aka min qaryatinā aw lata`ūdunna fī millatinā ۚ qāla awalaw kunnā kārihīn The arrogant leaders of the people replied: "We shall drive you away from our land, O Shu'aib, and those who are with you, unless you come back to your faith." But he remarked: "Even if we are disgusted with it?

قَدِ ٱفْتَرَيْنَا عَلَى ٱللَّهِ كَذِبًا إِنْ عُدْنَا فِى مِلَّتِكُم بَعْدَ إِذْ نَجَّىٰنَا ٱللَّهُ مِنْهَا ۚ وَمَا يَكُونُ لَنَآ أَن نَّعُودَ فِيهَآ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّنَا ۚ وَسِعَ رَبُّنَا كُلَّ شَىْءٍ عِلْمًا ۚ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ تَوَكَّلْنَا ۚ رَبَّنَا ٱفْتَحْ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَ قَوْمِنَا بِٱلْحَقِّ وَأَنتَ خَيْرُ ٱلْفَـٰتِحِينَ qadif-taraynā `alallāhi kadhiban in `udnā fī millatikum ba`da idh najjānallāhu minhā ۚ wa mā yakūnu lanā an na`ūda fīhā illā an yashā-allāhu rabbunā ۚ wasi`a rabbunā kulla shay-in `il-mā ۚ `alallāhi tawakkalnā ۚ rabbanaf-taḥ baynanā wabayna qawminā bil ḥaqqi wa-anta khayrul fātiḥīn We shall only be guilty of blaspheming God if we accept your way after the people of Noah, and gave you a greater increase in your stature. So think of the favours of God; you may haply be blessed."
90
وَقَالَ ٱلْمَلَأُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ مِن قَوْمِهِۦ لَئِنِ ٱتَّبَعْتُمْ شُعَيْبًا إِنَّكُمْ إِذًا لَّخَـٰسِرُونَ waqālal-mala-ul ladhīna kafarū min qawmihi la-init-taba`tum shu`ayban innakum idhal lakhāsirūn The chiefs among his people who did not believe said (to them): "If you follow Shu'aib and his way you will surely be ruined."
91
فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ ٱلرَّجْفَةُ فَأَصْبَحُوا۟ فِى دَارِهِمْ جَـٰثِمِينَ fa-akhadhat-humur rajfatu fa-aṣbaḥū fī dārihim jāthimīn Then they were seized by an earthquake, and lay overturned on the ground in their homes in the morning.
92
ٱلَّذِينَ كَذَّبُوا۟ شُعَيْبًا كَأَن لَّمْ يَغْنَوْا۟ فِيهَا ۚ ٱلَّذِينَ كَذَّبُوا۟ شُعَيْبًا كَانُوا۟ هُمُ ٱلْخَـٰسِرِينَ alladhīna kadhhabū shu`ayban ka-an lam yaghnaw fīhā ۚ alladhīna kadhhabū shu`ayban kānū humul khāsirīn They who called Shu'aib a liar (disappeared) as though they had never existed; and those who called Shu'aib a liar were the ones who were ruined!
93
فَتَوَلَّىٰ عَنْهُمْ وَقَالَ يَـٰقَوْمِ لَقَدْ أَبْلَغْتُكُمْ رِسَـٰلَـٰتِ رَبِّى وَنَصَحْتُ لَكُمْ ۖ فَكَيْفَ ءَاسَىٰ عَلَىٰ قَوْمٍ كَـٰفِرِينَ fatawallā `anhum waqāla yāqawmi laqad ablaghtukum risālāti rabbī wanaṣaḥtu lakum ۖ fakayfa āsā `alā qawmin kāfirīn So Shu'aib turned away from them and said: "O people, I conveyed to you the message of my Lord, and warned you. (But you paid no heed). How can I grieve for a people who do not believe?"
94
وَمَآ أَرْسَلْنَا فِى قَرْيَةٍ مِّن نَّبِىٍّ إِلَّآ أَخَذْنَآ أَهْلَهَا بِٱلْبَأْسَآءِ وَٱلضَّرَّآءِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَضَّرَّعُونَ wa mā arsalnā fī qaryatim min nabiyyin illā akhadhnā ahlahā bil ba-sā-i waḍ ḍarrā-i la`allahum yaḍḍarra`ūn There is not a region to which We sent a prophet and did not inflict upon its people adversity and hardship so that they may submit.
95
ثُمَّ بَدَّلْنَا مَكَانَ ٱلسَّيِّئَةِ ٱلْحَسَنَةَ حَتَّىٰ عَفَوا۟ وَّقَالُوا۟ قَدْ مَسَّ ءَابَآءَنَا ٱلضَّرَّآءُ وَٱلسَّرَّآءُ فَأَخَذْنَـٰهُم بَغْتَةً وَهُمْ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ thumma baddalnā makānas sayyi-atil ḥasanata ḥattā `afaw waqālū qad massa ābā-anaḍ ḍarrā-u was sarrā-u fa-akhadhnāhum baghtatan wahum lā yash`urūn But when We changed hardship to ease, and they rose and prospered, (they forgot Our favours) and said: "Our ancestors had also known suffering and joy." So We caught them unawares.
96
وَلَوْ أَنَّ أَهْلَ ٱلْقُرَىٰٓ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَٱتَّقَوْا۟ لَفَتَحْنَا عَلَيْهِم بَرَكَـٰتٍ مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَلَـٰكِن كَذَّبُوا۟ فَأَخَذْنَـٰهُم بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَكْسِبُونَ walaw anna ahlal-qurā āmanū wattaqaw lafataḥnā `alayhim barakātin minas samā-i wal-arḍi walākin kadhhabū fa-akhadhnāhum bimā kānū yaksibūn But if the people of these regions had believed and feared God, We would surely have showered on them blessings of the heavens and the earth; but they only denied, and We punished them for their deeds.
97
أَفَأَمِنَ أَهْلُ ٱلْقُرَىٰٓ أَن يَأْتِيَهُم بَأْسُنَا بَيَـٰتًا وَهُمْ نَآئِمُونَ afa-amina ahlul qurā an ya-tiyahum ba-sunā bayātan wahum nā-imūn Are the people of the region so secure that they lie asleep unaware as Our punishment overtakes them?
98

99
أَفَأَمِنُوا۟ مَكْرَ ٱللَّهِ ۚ فَلَا يَأْمَنُ مَكْرَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَّا ٱلْقَوْمُ ٱلْخَـٰسِرُونَ afa-aminū makrallāh ۚ falā ya-manu makrallāhi illal-qawmul khāsirūn Can they remain secure against the plan of God? Only they feel secure against the plan of God who are certain of being ruined.

101
تِلْكَ ٱلْقُرَىٰ نَقُصُّ عَلَيْكَ مِنْ أَنۢبَآئِهَا ۚ وَلَقَدْ جَآءَتْهُمْ رُسُلُهُم بِٱلْبَيِّنَـٰتِ فَمَا كَانُوا۟ لِيُؤْمِنُوا۟ بِمَا كَذَّبُوا۟ مِن قَبْلُ ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يَطْبَعُ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِ ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ tilkal qurā naquṣṣu `alayka min anbā-ihā ۚ walaqad jā-at hum rusuluhum bil bayyināti famā kānū liyu-minū bimā kadhhabū min qabl ۚ kadhālika yaṭba`ullāhu `alā qulūbil kāfirīn These were the (earlier) habitations whose accounts We have given to you. Their apostles came with clear proofs, but they did not believe what they once denied. That is how God seals the hearts of those who do not believe.
102
وَمَا وَجَدْنَا لِأَكْثَرِهِم مِّنْ عَهْدٍ ۖ وَإِن وَجَدْنَآ أَكْثَرَهُمْ لَفَـٰسِقِينَ wa mā wajadnā li-aktharihim min `ahd ۖ wa in wajadnā aktharahum lafāsiqīn We did not find many of them faithful to their promises, and found many of them disobedient.
103
ثُمَّ بَعَثْنَا مِنۢ بَعْدِهِم مُّوسَىٰ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَآ إِلَىٰ فِرْعَوْنَ وَمَلَإِي۟هِۦ فَظَلَمُوا۟ بِهَا ۖ فَٱنظُرْ كَيْفَ كَانَ عَـٰقِبَةُ ٱلْمُفْسِدِينَ thumma ba`athnā min ba`dihim mūsā bi-āyātinā ilā fir`awna wa mala-ihi faẓalamū bihā ۖ fanẓur kayfa kāna `āqibatul mufsidīn So We sent Moses with miracles after (these apostles) to the Pharaoh and his nobles, but they behaved with them high-handedly. See then the end of the authors of evil.
104
وَقَالَ مُوسَىٰ يَـٰفِرْعَوْنُ إِنِّى رَسُولٌ مِّن رَّبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ waqāla mūsā yāfir`awnu innī rasūlun min rabbil `ālamīn Moses said: "O Pharaoh, I have been sent by the Lord of all the worlds;

قَالَ إِن كُنتَ جِئْتَ بِـَٔايَةٍ فَأْتِ بِهَآ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ qāla in kunta ji-ta bi-āyatin fa-ti bihā in kunta minaṣ ṣādiqīn He said: "If you have brought a sign then display it, if what you say is true."
107
فَأَلْقَىٰ عَصَاهُ فَإِذَا هِىَ ثُعْبَانٌ مُّبِينٌ fa-alqā `aṣāhu fa-idhā hiya thu`bānun mubīn At this Moses threw down his staff, and lo, it became a live serpent.
108
وَنَزَعَ يَدَهُۥ فَإِذَا هِىَ بَيْضَآءُ لِلنَّـٰظِرِينَ wanaza`a yadahu fa-idhā hiya bayḍā-u linnāẓirīn And he drew forth his hand, and behold, it looked white to those who beheld it.
109
قَالَ ٱلْمَلَأُ مِن قَوْمِ فِرْعَوْنَ إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَسَـٰحِرٌ عَلِيمٌ qālal-mala-u min qawmi fir`awna inna hādhā lasāḥirun `alīm The nobles of Pharaoh said: "He surely is a clever magician.

111
قَالُوٓا۟ أَرْجِهْ وَأَخَاهُ وَأَرْسِلْ فِى ٱلْمَدَآئِنِ حَـٰشِرِينَ qālū arjih wa-akhāhu wa-arsil fil madā-ini ḥāshirīn They said: "Put him and his brother off (awhile) and send out heralds to the cities

يَأْتُوكَ بِكُلِّ سَـٰحِرٍ عَلِيمٍ ya-tūka bikulli sāḥirin `alīm "To bring all the wise magicians to you."
113
وَجَآءَ ٱلسَّحَرَةُ فِرْعَوْنَ قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّ لَنَا لَأَجْرًا إِن كُنَّا نَحْنُ ٱلْغَـٰلِبِينَ wajā-as saḥaratu fir`awna qālū inna lanā la-ajran in kunnā naḥnul ghālibīn The magicians came to the Pharaoh and said: "Is there reward for us if we succeed?"
114
قَالَ نَعَمْ وَإِنَّكُمْ لَمِنَ ٱلْمُقَرَّبِينَ qāla na`am wa innakum laminal muqarrabīn "Yes," said he, "you will be among the honoured."
115
قَالُوا۟ يَـٰمُوسَىٰٓ إِمَّآ أَن تُلْقِىَ وَإِمَّآ أَن نَّكُونَ نَحْنُ ٱلْمُلْقِينَ qālū yāmūsā immā an tulqiya wa immā an nakūna naḥnul mulqīn So they said: "O Moses, you may cast your spell first, or we shall cast ours."
116
قَالَ أَلْقُوا۟ ۖ فَلَمَّآ أَلْقَوْا۟ سَحَرُوٓا۟ أَعْيُنَ ٱلنَّاسِ وَٱسْتَرْهَبُوهُمْ وَجَآءُو بِسِحْرٍ عَظِيمٍ qāla alqū ۖ falammā alqaw saḥarū a`yunan nāsi wastarhabūhum wajā-ū bisiḥrin `aẓīm "You cast it first," answered Moses. When they cast their spell, they bewitched the eyes of the people and petrified them by conjuring up a great charm.
117
وَأَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰٓ أَنْ أَلْقِ عَصَاكَ ۖ فَإِذَا هِىَ تَلْقَفُ مَا يَأْفِكُونَ wa-awḥaynā ilā mūsā an alqi `aṣāk ۖ fa-idhā hiya talqafu mā ya-fikūn We said to Moses: "Throw down your staff;" and it swallowed up their conjurations in no time.
118
فَوَقَعَ ٱلْحَقُّ وَبَطَلَ مَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ fawaqa`al ḥaqqu wabaṭala mā kānū ya`malūn Thus the truth was upheld, and the falsehood that they practised was exposed.
119
فَغُلِبُوا۟ هُنَالِكَ وَٱنقَلَبُوا۟ صَـٰغِرِينَ faghulibū hunālika wanqalabū ṣāghirīn Thus there and then they were vanquished and overthrown, humiliated.
120
وَأُلْقِىَ ٱلسَّحَرَةُ سَـٰجِدِينَ wa-ulqiyas saḥaratu sājidīn The sorcerers fell to the ground in homage,
121
قَالُوٓا۟ ءَامَنَّا بِرَبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ qālū āmannā birabbil `ālamīn And said: "We have come to believe in the Lord of all the worlds,

رَبِّ مُوسَىٰ وَهَـٰرُونَ rabbi mūsā wahārūn "The Lord of Moses and Aaron."
123
قَالَ فِرْعَوْنُ ءَامَنتُم بِهِۦ قَبْلَ أَنْ ءَاذَنَ لَكُمْ ۖ إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَمَكْرٌ مَّكَرْتُمُوهُ فِى ٱلْمَدِينَةِ لِتُخْرِجُوا۟ مِنْهَآ أَهْلَهَا ۖ فَسَوْفَ تَعْلَمُونَ qāla fir`awnu āmantum bihi qabla an ādhana lakum ۖ inna hādhā lamakrun makartumūhu fil madīnati litukhrijū minhā ahlahā ۖ fasawfa ta`lamūn But Pharaoh said: "You have come to accept belief in Him without my permission! This surely is a plot you have hatched to expel the people from the land. You will soon come to know.

قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّآ إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا مُنقَلِبُونَ qālū innā ilā rabbinā munqalibūn They answered: "We have (in any case) to go back to our Lord.
126
وَمَا تَنقِمُ مِنَّآ إِلَّآ أَنْ ءَامَنَّا بِـَٔايَـٰتِ رَبِّنَا لَمَّا جَآءَتْنَا ۚ رَبَّنَآ أَفْرِغْ عَلَيْنَا صَبْرًا وَتَوَفَّنَا مُسْلِمِينَ wa mā tanqimu minnā illā an āmannā bi-āyāti rabbinā lammā jā-at nā ۚ rabbanā afrigh `alaynā ṣabran watawaffanā muslimīn "The only reason you have to hate us is that we believed in the signs of our Lord as they came to us. O our Lord, give us sufficient endurance that we may die submitting (to You)."
127
وَقَالَ ٱلْمَلَأُ مِن قَوْمِ فِرْعَوْنَ أَتَذَرُ مُوسَىٰ وَقَوْمَهُۥ لِيُفْسِدُوا۟ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَيَذَرَكَ وَءَالِهَتَكَ ۚ قَالَ سَنُقَتِّلُ أَبْنَآءَهُمْ وَنَسْتَحْىِۦ نِسَآءَهُمْ وَإِنَّا فَوْقَهُمْ قَـٰهِرُونَ waqālal-mala-u min qawmi fir`awna atadharu mūsā waqawmahu liyufsidū fil-arḍi wayadharaka wa-ālihatak ۚ qāla sanuqattilu abnā-ahum wanastaḥyī nisā-ahum wa innā fawqahum qāhirūn And the leaders of Pharaoh's people said to him: "Would you allow Moses and his people to create disorder in the land and discard you and your gods?" He replied: "We shall now slay their sons and spare their women, and subdue them."
128
قَالَ مُوسَىٰ لِقَوْمِهِ ٱسْتَعِينُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱصْبِرُوٓا۟ ۖ إِنَّ ٱلْأَرْضَ لِلَّهِ يُورِثُهَا مَن يَشَآءُ مِنْ عِبَادِهِۦ ۖ وَٱلْعَـٰقِبَةُ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ qāla mūsā liqawmihis-ta`īnū billāhi waṣbirū ۖ innal-arḍa lillāhi yūrithuhā man yashā-u min `ibādih ۖ wal `āqibatu lil-muttaqīn Said Moses to his people: "Invoke the help of God and be firm. The earth belongs to God: He can make whom He wills among His creatures inherit it. The future is theirs who take heed for themselves."
129
قَالُوٓا۟ أُوذِينَا مِن قَبْلِ أَن تَأْتِيَنَا وَمِنۢ بَعْدِ مَا جِئْتَنَا ۚ قَالَ عَسَىٰ رَبُّكُمْ أَن يُهْلِكَ عَدُوَّكُمْ وَيَسْتَخْلِفَكُمْ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ فَيَنظُرَ كَيْفَ تَعْمَلُونَ qālū ūdhīnā min qabli an ta-tiyanā wa min ba`di mā ji-tanā ۚ qāla `asā rabbukum an yuhlika `aduwwakum wayastakhlifakum fil-arḍi fayanẓura kayfa ta`malūn They said: "We were oppressed before you came, and have been since you have come to us." He answered: "It may well be that soon God may destroy your enemy and make you inherit the land, and then see how you behave."
130
وَلَقَدْ أَخَذْنَآ ءَالَ فِرْعَوْنَ بِٱلسِّنِينَ وَنَقْصٍ مِّنَ ٱلثَّمَرَٰتِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَذَّكَّرُونَ walaqad akhadhnā āla fir`awna bis sinīna wanaqṣin minath thamarāti la`allahum yadhhakkarūn We afflicted the people of Pharaoh with famine and dearth of everything that they might take heed.
131
فَإِذَا جَآءَتْهُمُ ٱلْحَسَنَةُ قَالُوا۟ لَنَا هَـٰذِهِۦ ۖ وَإِن تُصِبْهُمْ سَيِّئَةٌ يَطَّيَّرُوا۟ بِمُوسَىٰ وَمَن مَّعَهُۥٓ ۗ أَلَآ إِنَّمَا طَـٰٓئِرُهُمْ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ fa-idhā jā-at humul ḥasanatu qālū lanā hādhih ۖ wa in tuṣibhum sayyi-atun yaṭṭayyarū bimūsā wa man ma`ah ۗ alā innamā ṭā-iruhum `indallāhi walākinna aktharahum lā ya`lamūn Yet when good came their way they said: "It is our due;" but when misfortune befell them they put the omen down to Moses and those who were with him. But surely the omen was with God, yet most of them did not understand.
132
وَقَالُوا۟ مَهْمَا تَأْتِنَا بِهِۦ مِنْ ءَايَةٍ لِّتَسْحَرَنَا بِهَا فَمَا نَحْنُ لَكَ بِمُؤْمِنِينَ waqālū mahmā ta-tinā bihi min āyatin litas-ḥaranā bihā famā naḥnu laka bimu-minīn They said: "Whatsoever the sign you have brought to deceive us, we shall not believe in you."
133
فَأَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلطُّوفَانَ وَٱلْجَرَادَ وَٱلْقُمَّلَ وَٱلضَّفَادِعَ وَٱلدَّمَ ءَايَـٰتٍ مُّفَصَّلَـٰتٍ فَٱسْتَكْبَرُوا۟ وَكَانُوا۟ قَوْمًا مُّجْرِمِينَ fa-arsalnā `alayhimuṭ ṭūfāna wal jarāda wal qummala waḍ ḍafādi`a wad dama āyātin mufaṣṣalātin fastakbarū wakānū qawman mujrimīn So We let loose on them floods and locusts, and vermin, frogs and blood -- how many different signs. But they still remained arrogant, for they were a people full of sin.
134
وَلَمَّا وَقَعَ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلرِّجْزُ قَالُوا۟ يَـٰمُوسَى ٱدْعُ لَنَا رَبَّكَ بِمَا عَهِدَ عِندَكَ ۖ لَئِن كَشَفْتَ عَنَّا ٱلرِّجْزَ لَنُؤْمِنَنَّ لَكَ وَلَنُرْسِلَنَّ مَعَكَ بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ walammā waqa`a `alayhimur rijzu qālū yāmūsad-`u lanā rabbaka bimā `ahida `indak ۖ la-in kashafta `annar rijza lanu-minanna laka walanursilanna ma`aka banī isrā-iyl Yet when punishment overtook them, they said: "O Moses, invoke your Lord for us as you have been enjoined. If the torment is removed, we shall certainly believe in you and let the people of Israel go with you."
135
فَلَمَّا كَشَفْنَا عَنْهُمُ ٱلرِّجْزَ إِلَىٰٓ أَجَلٍ هُم بَـٰلِغُوهُ إِذَا هُمْ يَنكُثُونَ falammā kashafnā `anhumur rijza ilā ajalin hum bālighūhu idhā hum yankuthūn But no sooner was the punishment withdrawn for a time to enable them to make good their promise than they broke it.
136
فَٱنتَقَمْنَا مِنْهُمْ فَأَغْرَقْنَـٰهُمْ فِى ٱلْيَمِّ بِأَنَّهُمْ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا وَكَانُوا۟ عَنْهَا غَـٰفِلِينَ fantaqamnā minhum fa-aghraqnāhum fil yammi bi-annahum kadhhabū bi-āyātinā wakānū `anhā ghāfilīn So We took vengeance on them, and drowned them in the sea for rejecting Our signs and not heeding them.
137
وَأَوْرَثْنَا ٱلْقَوْمَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَانُوا۟ يُسْتَضْعَفُونَ مَشَـٰرِقَ ٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَغَـٰرِبَهَا ٱلَّتِى بَـٰرَكْنَا فِيهَا ۖ وَتَمَّتْ كَلِمَتُ رَبِّكَ ٱلْحُسْنَىٰ عَلَىٰ بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ بِمَا صَبَرُوا۟ ۖ وَدَمَّرْنَا مَا كَانَ يَصْنَعُ فِرْعَوْنُ وَقَوْمُهُۥ وَمَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْرِشُونَ wa-awrathnal qawmal ladhīna kānū yustaḍ`afūna mashāriqal-arḍi wa maghāribahal latī bāraknā fīhā ۖ watammat kalimatu rabbikal ḥusnā `alā banī isrā-iyla bimā ṣabarū ۖ wadammarnā mā kāna yaṣna`u fir`awnu waqawmuhu wa mā kānū ya`rishūn We then made the people who were weak (and oppressed) successors of the land to the East and the West which We had blessed. Thus the fair promise of your Lord to the children of Israel was fulfilled, for they were patient in adversity; and whatsoever the Pharaoh and his people had fashioned, and the structures they had raised, were destroyed.
138
وَجَـٰوَزْنَا بِبَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ ٱلْبَحْرَ فَأَتَوْا۟ عَلَىٰ قَوْمٍ يَعْكُفُونَ عَلَىٰٓ أَصْنَامٍ لَّهُمْ ۚ قَالُوا۟ يَـٰمُوسَى ٱجْعَل لَّنَآ إِلَـٰهًا كَمَا لَهُمْ ءَالِهَةٌ ۚ قَالَ إِنَّكُمْ قَوْمٌ تَجْهَلُونَ wajāwaznā bibanī isrā-iylal-baḥra fa-ataw `alā qawmiy ya`kufūna `alā aṣnāmin lahum ۚ qālū yāmūsaj-`al lanā ilāhan kamā lahum ālihah ۚ qāla innakum qawmun tajhalūn When We brought the children of Israel across the sea, and they came to a people who were devoted to their idols, they said: "O Moses, make us also a god like theirs." "You are ignorant," he replied.
139

In this was a great trial from your Lord."

وَوَٰعَدْنَا مُوسَىٰ ثَلَـٰثِينَ لَيْلَةً وَأَتْمَمْنَـٰهَا بِعَشْرٍ فَتَمَّ مِيقَـٰتُ رَبِّهِۦٓ أَرْبَعِينَ لَيْلَةً ۚ وَقَالَ مُوسَىٰ لِأَخِيهِ هَـٰرُونَ ٱخْلُفْنِى فِى قَوْمِى وَأَصْلِحْ وَلَا تَتَّبِعْ سَبِيلَ ٱلْمُفْسِدِينَ wawā`adnā mūsā thalāthīna laylatan wa-atmamnāhā bi`ashrin fatamma mīqātu rabbihi arba`īna laylah ۚ waqāla mūsā li-akhīhi hārūnakh-lufnī fī qawmī wa-aṣliḥ walā tattabi` sabīlal-mufsidīn We made an appointment of thirty nights with Moses (On Mount Sinai) to which We added ten more; so the term set by the Lord was completed in forty nights. Moses said to Aaron, his brother: "Deputise for me among my people. Dispose rightly, and do not follow the way of the authors of evil."
143
وَلَمَّا جَآءَ مُوسَىٰ لِمِيقَـٰتِنَا وَكَلَّمَهُۥ رَبُّهُۥ قَالَ رَبِّ أَرِنِىٓ أَنظُرْ إِلَيْكَ ۚ قَالَ لَن تَرَىٰنِى وَلَـٰكِنِ ٱنظُرْ إِلَى ٱلْجَبَلِ فَإِنِ ٱسْتَقَرَّ مَكَانَهُۥ فَسَوْفَ تَرَىٰنِى ۚ فَلَمَّا تَجَلَّىٰ رَبُّهُۥ لِلْجَبَلِ جَعَلَهُۥ دَكًّا وَخَرَّ مُوسَىٰ صَعِقًا ۚ فَلَمَّآ أَفَاقَ قَالَ سُبْحَـٰنَكَ تُبْتُ إِلَيْكَ وَأَنَا۠ أَوَّلُ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ walammā jā-a mūsā limīqātinā wakallamahu rabbuhu qāla rabbi arinī anẓur ilayk ۚ qāla lan tarānī walākinin-ẓur ilal-jabali fa-inis-taqarra makānahu fasawfa tarānī ۚ falammā tajallā rabbuhu liljabali ja`alahu dakkan wakharra mūsā ṣa`iqā ۚ falammā afāqa qāla subḥānaka tubtu ilayka wa-ana awwalul mu-minīn When Moses arrived at the appointed time and his Lord spoke to him, he said: "O Lord, reveal Yourself to me that I may behold You." "You cannot behold Me," He said. "But look at the mountain: If it remains firm in its place you may then behold Me." But when his Lord appeared on the mountain in His effulgence, it crumbled to a heap of dust, and Moses fell unconscious. When he came to, he said: "All glory to You. I turn to You in repentance, and I am the first to believe."
144
قَالَ يَـٰمُوسَىٰٓ إِنِّى ٱصْطَفَيْتُكَ عَلَى ٱلنَّاسِ بِرِسَـٰلَـٰتِى وَبِكَلَـٰمِى فَخُذْ مَآ ءَاتَيْتُكَ وَكُن مِّنَ ٱلشَّـٰكِرِينَ qāla yāmūsā inniṣ-ṭafaytuka `alan nāsi birisālātī wabikalāmī fakhudh mā ātaytuka wakun minash shākirīn Said (the Lord): "O Moses, I raised you above all men by sending My messages and speaking to you; so receive what I give you, and be grateful."
145

I will show you the abode of the wicked.
146
سَأَصْرِفُ عَنْ ءَايَـٰتِىَ ٱلَّذِينَ يَتَكَبَّرُونَ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ بِغَيْرِ ٱلْحَقِّ وَإِن يَرَوْا۟ كُلَّ ءَايَةٍ لَّا يُؤْمِنُوا۟ بِهَا وَإِن يَرَوْا۟ سَبِيلَ ٱلرُّشْدِ لَا يَتَّخِذُوهُ سَبِيلًا وَإِن يَرَوْا۟ سَبِيلَ ٱلْغَىِّ يَتَّخِذُوهُ سَبِيلًا ۚ ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا وَكَانُوا۟ عَنْهَا غَـٰفِلِينَ sa-aṣrifu `an āyātiyal ladhīna yatakabbarūna fil-arḍi bighayril ḥaqqi wa in yaraw kulla āyatin lā yu-minū bihā wa in yaraw sabīlar rushdi lā yattakhidhūhu sabīlan wa in yaraw sabīlal-ghayyi yattakhidhūhu sabīlā ۚ dhālika bi-annahum kadhhabū bi-āyātinā wakānū `anhā ghāfilīn I will turn those away from My signs who behave unjustly with arrogance in the land so that even though they see all the signs they will not believe in them; and if they see the path of rectitude, will not take it to be a way; and if they see the way of error take it to be the (right) path. This is so for they have called Our messages lies, and have been heedless of them."
147
وَٱلَّذِينَ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا وَلِقَآءِ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ حَبِطَتْ أَعْمَـٰلُهُمْ ۚ هَلْ يُجْزَوْنَ إِلَّا مَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ wal ladhīna kadhhabū bi-āyātinā waliqā-il-ākhirati ḥabiṭat a`māluhum ۚ hal yujzawna illā mā kānū ya`malūn Vain are the acts of those who deny Our signs and the meeting in the Hereafter. Can they ever be rewarded for anything but what they did?
148
وَٱتَّخَذَ قَوْمُ مُوسَىٰ مِنۢ بَعْدِهِۦ مِنْ حُلِيِّهِمْ عِجْلًا جَسَدًا لَّهُۥ خُوَارٌ ۚ أَلَمْ يَرَوْا۟ أَنَّهُۥ لَا يُكَلِّمُهُمْ وَلَا يَهْدِيهِمْ سَبِيلًا ۘ ٱتَّخَذُوهُ وَكَانُوا۟ ظَـٰلِمِينَ wattakhadha qawmu mūsā min ba`dihi min ḥuliyyihim `ijlan jasadal lahu khuwār ۚ alam yaraw annahu lā yukallimuhum walā yahdīhim sabīlā ۘ it-takhadhūhu wakānū ẓālimīn In the absence of Moses his people prepared the image of a calf from their ornaments, which gave out the mooing of a cow. Yet they did not see it could neither speak to them nor guide them to the right path. Even then they took it (for a deity) and did wrong.
149
وَلَمَّا سُقِطَ فِىٓ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَرَأَوْا۟ أَنَّهُمْ قَدْ ضَلُّوا۟ قَالُوا۟ لَئِن لَّمْ يَرْحَمْنَا رَبُّنَا وَيَغْفِرْ لَنَا لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلْخَـٰسِرِينَ walammā suqiṭa fī aydīhim wara-aw annahum qad ḍallū qālū la-in lam yarḥamnā rabbunā wayaghfir lanā lanakūnanna minal khāsirīn Then they were filled with remorse and saw that they had erred and said: "If our Lord does not forgive us we will surely be lost."

وَلَمَّا رَجَعَ مُوسَىٰٓ إِلَىٰ قَوْمِهِۦ غَضْبَـٰنَ أَسِفًا قَالَ بِئْسَمَا خَلَفْتُمُونِى مِنۢ بَعْدِىٓ ۖ أَعَجِلْتُمْ أَمْرَ رَبِّكُمْ ۖ وَأَلْقَى ٱلْأَلْوَاحَ وَأَخَذَ بِرَأْسِ أَخِيهِ يَجُرُّهُۥٓ إِلَيْهِ ۚ قَالَ ٱبْنَ أُمَّ إِنَّ ٱلْقَوْمَ ٱسْتَضْعَفُونِى وَكَادُوا۟ يَقْتُلُونَنِى فَلَا تُشْمِتْ بِىَ ٱلْأَعْدَآءَ وَلَا تَجْعَلْنِى مَعَ ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ walammā raja`a mūsā ilā qawmihi ghaḍbāna asifan qāla bi-samā khalaftumūnī min ba`dī ۖ a`ajiltum amra rabbikum ۖ wa-alqal-alwāḥa wa-akhadha bira-si akhīhi yajurruhu ilayh ۚ qālab-na umma innal qawmas-taḍ`afūnī wakādū yaqtulūnanī falā tushmit biyal-a`dā-a walā taj`alnī ma`al qawmiẓ ẓālimīn When Moses returned to his people, indignant and grieved, he said: "How wickedly you behaved in my absence. Why must you hasten the decree of your Lord?" And he cast aside the tablets, and pulled his brother by the hair. "O son of my mother," said (Aaron), "these people took advantage of my weakness and almost killed me. Do not let my enemies rejoice at my plight, and do not put me down among transgressors."
151
قَالَ رَبِّ ٱغْفِرْ لِى وَلِأَخِى وَأَدْخِلْنَا فِى رَحْمَتِكَ ۖ وَأَنتَ أَرْحَمُ ٱلرَّٰحِمِينَ qāla rabbigh-fir lī wali-akhī wa-adkhilnā fī raḥmatik ۖ wa-anta arḥamur rāḥimīn (Moses) said: "O Lord, forgive me and my brother, and admit us to Your grace, for You are the most compassionate of all."
152
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱتَّخَذُوا۟ ٱلْعِجْلَ سَيَنَالُهُمْ غَضَبٌ مِّن رَّبِّهِمْ وَذِلَّةٌ فِى ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنْيَا ۚ وَكَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِى ٱلْمُفْتَرِينَ innal ladhīnat-takhadhul `ijla sayanāluhum ghaḍabun min rabbihim wadhillatun fil ḥayātid dunyā ۚ wakadhālika najzil muftarīn Surely those who have taken the calf (as a god) will suffer the anger of their Lord, and disgrace in the world. That is how We requite those who fabricate lies.
153
وَٱلَّذِينَ عَمِلُوا۟ ٱلسَّيِّـَٔاتِ ثُمَّ تَابُوا۟ مِنۢ بَعْدِهَا وَءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ مِنۢ بَعْدِهَا لَغَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ wal ladhīna `amilus sayyi-āti thumma tābū min ba`dihā wa-āmanū inna rabbaka min ba`dihā laghafūrun raḥīm Yet those who do wrong, then repent and believe, are forgiven, for your Lord is forgiving and kind.

When they arrived they were seized by a tremor. (Moses) said: "O Lord, if You had so pleased You could have annihilated them and me before this. Will You destroy us for something the foolish among us have done? This is but a trial from You whereby You will lead whom You will astray and guide whom You please. You are our saviour, so forgive us and have mercy on us, for You are the best of forgivers.

When his people asked for water, We said to Moses: "Strike the rock with your staff;" and behold, twelve springs of water gushed forth, so that each of the tribes had a place of its own to drink; and We made the clouds spread shade over them and sent for them manna and quails (and said): "Eat of the good things We have provided for you." But (by disobeying) they did not harm Us, they harmed themselves.

They took to the things of this base world, and said: "We shall (surely) be forgiven this." Yet they will accept similar things if they came their way again. Had they not been covenanted in the Book to say nothing in the name of God but the truth? And they have read this in it. The abode of the life to come is better for those who fear God. Can they not comprehend?

Narrate this history to them; they may haply reflect.
